A former EastEnders actress is to stand trial accused of drug-smuggling.
Leanne Lakey who played Belinda Peacock in the soap between 2001-2003 is accused of trying to surreptitiously bring a quantity of cocaine into the UK.
An amount of the class A drug – totalling almost 3 kilos according to reports – was discovered in the suitcase of the actress’s travelling companion Dean Shanahan at Gatwick Airport on December 12 year.
It is alleged the 39-year-old colluded with Shanahan, 47, to sneak the drugs into the country. The actress pleaded not guilty to “evading probation on importing class A drugs”, at Croydon Crown Court and will stand trial in December.
Lakey is known for playing snobby Belinda in the BBC One soap intermittently for three years, making a number of short appearances in the main series and a cameo on a spin-off DVD in that time, and for her role as Charlotte Day in defunct Channel 5 saga Family Affairs.
In January 2016, the role of Belinda was recast to Carli Norris. Lakey’s last credit is the 2011 comedy film Big Fat Gypsy Gangster as per IMDB.
