Former EastEnders star Kacey Ainsworth has told how she was groomed while working as a child actor in the 1970s.
Kacey is backing Loose Women’s ‘Never Too Late To Tell’ campaign and appeared on the show to share her experience with a “much older” co-star today.
“What I realise now is that paedophiles work in plain sight. It starts off with something very innocuous, like tickling, or maybe even singling you out. This is kind of what happened to me.
“It was very inappropriate, what he was doing, but because it was in front of everybody, it kind of normalised it. And then he would take me to more and more private places, and that’s what happens. It’s predatory, it’s incremental.
“I was starting puberty. They were touching areas that were growing. That felt odd and weird – but nobody said anything. Children often don’t realise, first of all, what’s happening, and then as it goes on, you don’t know what to do, you don’t know who to tell and you don’t know what to say.” – Kacey Ainsworth
The actress, who played Little Mo in the BBC One soap between 2000-2006, added that she was ‘very fortunate’ because “someone in the production team noticed what was happening and kind of saved me, really.”
Kacey is best remembered by EastEnders fans for a high-profile domestic violence storyline that saw Mo suffer at the hands of controlling husband Trevor (Alex Ferns). Since leaving the show Kacey has appeared in Midsomer Murders, The Worst Witch and Grantchester.
