ITV Granada has released a new promo for the long-running serial and baddie Pat Phelan as he makes his, executives say, final appearances in the Salford based production.
“Pat Phelan, arguably Coronation Street’s greatest villain of all time, deserved an equally villainous promotional spot to alert the audience of his return to the street. We wanted to take the iconic street and show it as it’s never been shown before, dripping with a claustrophobically foreboding atmosphere.” – Tony Pipes, Executive Creative Director of ITV Creative
Billy Fury once sang that The Night has a Thousand Eyes, well they’re not looking at the sky that’s for sure down in Weatherfield as all eyes will be on Pat Phelan as he makes a dramatic return to Coronation Street this month for one final showdown.
A bruised and battered Phelan has been lying low away from Weatherfield following his run of evil coming to a seeming end last month. But despite his absence he’s still been keeping a close eye on those he feels have wronged him and on those, he may wish to take his revenge. So when Gary tracks Phelan down to a campsite in Wales and drags him back to the street, his pent-up fury is unleashed.
In the trailer from the ITV Creative department, the residents reel in shock and horror as they realise Phelan has been watching their every move. As he lurks around each corner we see there is nowhere to hide from Pat as he wreaks his villainous revenge.
Pat makes Andy murder Vinny.
“We placed Pat Phelan at the heart of the promo, appearing impossibly around every corner of the street for five unsuspecting characters: Nicola, Seb, Eileen, Gary and Sarah. The spot ends by revealing an army of approaching Pat Phelan’s surrounding the five huddled characters. This final climactic scene was captured using a combination of motion control and lighting special effects.” – Tony Pipes, Executive Creative Director of ITV Creative
Pat has become Salford’s grimmest serial killer of the decade bumping off a number of the soap characters, or just letting them die to save him from business complications. His first ‘victim‘ of sorts was Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis) who having got wind of one of Phelan’s scams was out to expose the builder. Unfortunately for Michael, he suffered a heart attack when confronted by Pat, who watched as one less problem died in front of him
Luke meets his maker thanks to Pat.
His first true victim came on the eve of a double murder when he killed, via hostage Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth), former business partner Harvey McArdle (who had been calling himself Vinny Ashford) (actor Ian Kelsey), who had run off with some of Pat’s hard earned, all be it dubiously, cash. In the same night he then, having no other use for him took the life of Andy.
A real shock murder came when he killed motor mechanic Luke Britton (Dean Fagan). Like Michael before him Luke had become suspicious of Pat, and digging into his affairs didn’t sit well with the easy to annoy Pat. After a show down Pat made sure Luke had an explosive death.
“The journey towards his [Pat’s] comeuppance will be very lively I’m sure.” – actor Connor McIntyre
