Andrew Lloyd Webber is on a nationwide search for his next rock arena superstar. On offer is a unique opportunity to play the lead role in the all-new arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar across the UK, starting at London’s O2 arena
Following a number of years with the BBC Andrew Lloyd Webber has now dumbed down and hopped over to ITV where he hopes that their viewers will help him discover an extraordinary new voice to fill the country’s largest arenas.
“Presenting a new, 2012 version of Jesus Christ Superstar for arenas is truly exciting,” says Lord Lloyd Webber. “Some of the best performances of this show have been in rock venues and I’m thrilled to see the show return to its roots. ITV is providing the perfect platform for us to find a new, British Superstar.”
Auditions took place across the country during the early months of 2012 in London, Dublin, Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff. The casting team is made up of Melanie C, Jason Donovan and David Grindrod who help Andrew whittle down his hopefuls to a selection of Finalists who will make it through to the live studio shows. Lloyd Webber will then be joined by his panel, Dawn French and Jason Donovan. The show will be hosted by Amanda Holden.
“He’s taken his talent search to ITV to find a voice? Does he not watch ITV? He might find himself an attractive looking bloke with no talent from Essex there, ITV is full of those.” says ATV critic Queenie.
But ultimately it will be up to the British public to decide who they want to be his Superstar and play the role of Jesus Christ Superstar. The ITV trailer for the ‘highlight of the year’ is below.
