Coronation Street saw off competition from EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Doctors, River City and Pobol Y Cym to take home the award for ‘Best Soap’ at last night’s Freesat TV Awards.
It continues a successful year for the long-running ITV serial which picked up nine gongs at last month’s British Soap Awards and triumphed at this year’s RTS and TRIC awards in March, Broadcast awards in February and at the National Television Awards in January.
Elsewhere, BBC Two was given the prestigious title of Freesat Channel Of The Year, while the feature-length instalment of BBC One’s Doctor Who to mark the sci-fi drama’s 50th anniversary, The Day Of The Doctor, was recognised in the Best TV Programme or Series category.
Also picking up gongs were Ant & Dec with their long-running ITV entertainment series Saturday Night Takeaway being named Best Live programme and the Geordie Duo also procuring the award for TV personality, Best Factual went to Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire, BBC Two thriller Line of Duty bagged Best Drama, whilst the channel also scooped Best Sitcom for The Wrong Mans.
Cbeebies’ Katie Morag won in the Best Children’s TV programme or Series category, Best Digital Radio Channel went to Absolute 80s, whilst The Travel Channel and Radio 5 Live triumphed in the Best Specialist Channel and Best News Channel categories respectively.
The ‘TV Personality’ and ‘Best Soap’ awards were decided on by the public with the rest of the winners being chosen by a panel of broadcasting experts and television commentators.
