ITV axe Adrian Chiles as lead football presenter

ITV SportAdrian Chiles was given a red card this week by ITV who have replaced him as their leading football presenter.

ITV has confirmed that Mark Pougatch will front their footballing coverage, beginning with a Champions League match next month. Pougatch can currently be heard as a sports presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Chiles, who fronted ITV’s coverage of the World Cup last year, has faced criticism from viewers who did not appreciate his style of presenting.

The 47-year-old joined ITV in 2010 after quitting The One Show on BBC One.

He was joined by his One Show co-host Christine Bleakley to launch ITV’s new breakfast show Daybreak. The successor to GMTV failed and the pair were quickly axed.

Both Chiles and Bleakley have remained with ITV, with Chiles concentrating on Sport and Bleakley fronting a number of programmes, currently covering for Holly Willoughby on This Morning.

Mark Pougatch confirmed on Twitter that he won’t be leaving Radio 5 Live, where he has worked for 20 years. He added that he was “delighted” to be joining ITV Sport.
