Channel 5 have revealed that their Football League weekly highlights show will air in a primetime weekend slot on the network.

The broadcaster has confirmed details of their coverage this season following the fixtures announcement, with their new show Football League Tonight. The programme will be shown live at 9pm slot on Channel 5 every Saturday of the season from Saturday 8th August. The rights have been signed to the channel to broadcast a 90 minute weekly Football League highlights show for the next three years.

“Each show will feature the top match footage from all three divisions of the Sky Bet Football League and will include every single goal from matches across the board. In addition, Channel 5 will also broadcast three one-hour shows covering the end of season Sky Bet Play-Offs across all three divisions, plus eight one-hour highlights shows covering the action from each round of the Capital One Cup.” – Channel 5

As well as every goal across the divisions, the show will be ‘jam packed with high profile names’. The channel notes, adding that they aim to bring players and managers into the Channel 5 studios or take part in the conversation via Skype and Facetime. The programme will also include a studio audience of genuine fans, reminiscent of Tyne Tees Television’s ‘The Football Show‘ which will allow the footie followers to give their opinions. Channel 5 boast that the series will have ‘no lengthy punditry, no football clichés’, and they make the bold statment that ‘this is football on 5 at its most exciting’.

“Channel 5 are committed to bringing a quality, innovative football highlights show to Saturday night primetime TV. The 9pm slot finally gives the Sky Bet Football League the coverage and respect the fans deserve on terrestrial television.” – Executive Producer for Channel 5 Mark Sharman

Sunset+Vine, the independent TV sports production and media company, is producing Football League Tonight Show for Channel 5.
