Editor Reports: We have ‘spoilers’ for a reason

Some websites just can’t help but spoil things for fans of shows by giving away details of plots in their headlines.

Like Digital Spy, for example, who this week revealed who would be the companion to The Doctor in the last two David Tennant episodes. This ATV Reports contains spoilers for Doctor Who.

It was revealed this week that actor Bernard Cribbins would return to Doctor Who to reprise his role of Wilf Mott for the final two episodes of David Tennant’s tenure. Now such information is certainly a spoiler as it reveals details of the companion to accompany the 10th Doctor on his final journey, or journeys, so how did Digital Spy decide to cover the story?

“Cribbins to be new ‘Doctor Who’ companion” – Digital Spy headline.

And how did ATV News cover it?

“Who Character Return Confirmed” – ATV News headline

Notice the difference? We also included a spoiler warning altering our readers not to read on if they didn’t wish to know the identity of the character. It’s just a shame Digital Spy once more revealed such information in their headline. Call me old fashioned but I do long for the days of the old TV Times and Radio Times when you never knew what was happening until the programme actually aired, with those publications giving nothing away. I know we now live in a media world of spoilers but can the online news community be professional about covering them and that means using a touch of discretion in the headline.
