Should the BBC bring back Eldorado? Poll Results

Published on Aug 27 2012 // ATV Polls, Broadcasting, Soapworld

ATV Today recently asked its readers whether the BBC should bring back its evening sunshine soap opera Eldorado twenty years after it originally launched.

The saga was set in the fictional village of Los Barcos, in Spain, where the thrice-weekly show followed the lives of Brits living abroad. The show was rushed on air to fill the gap left by the recently axed Wogan chat show, taking to the screen six months earlier than planned.

Acting, sound, lighting and scripts all came under fire in the beginning, but by the time Eldorado was ditched the programme had turned itself around and was, by the time the final episode aired, beating ITV rival Emmerdale in the ratings.

In the final episode no harm came to the village, life carried on, which left the possibility of the sun rising once more over the soap opera.

Readers voted overwhelmingly in favour of the show returning to BBC One with 94% of the votes stating a ‘yes’ to the shows return. That was over 1,500 votes. Only 6% said ‘no’ to the idea.

It’s 7pm slot however is currently filled by magazine series The One Show, and seems unlikely to be revived by the beeb.

It should never have been taken off in the first place!

Whoever has the forsight to make Eldorado as it should of been made (Pot of gold) deserves to be Director General of the BBC.

    • Sheila says:

Give it a few years and they could bring it back.

Lets hope Tony Hall can put the right management in place to allow a show like this to prosper.

  2. skol2012 says:

Agreed… so much mileage possible now with retirement houses being repossessed and the global recession etc… I would really enjoy a semi-serious alternative to Benidorm!

  3. ELDORADO was a failure it was doomed so never bring it back its as crazy as bringing DALLAS BACK so bury it. ATVs CROSSROADS ran for 25 years and only ended as CENTRAL kept changng everything and i beleave ATV wlll revive i one day as you cant destroy a legend which ELDORADO isnt so join the graveyard of other crap soaps as its as dead as the X FACTOR so replace that with ATVs NEW FACES but let ELDORAO rot it was rubbish.

    • ollie says:

Colin, Dallas is now massive in the states. X-Factor is far from dead. R u a fan of The Voice and Holby City? Personally I would love Eldorado to return.

      • ELDORADO is like GRANADAs ALBION MARKET it failed as it was rubbish i think DALLAS is americian trash as LORIMAR were right to cancel it when they did i shall not watch it as no television company can ever beat ATV as LEW GRADE made it into the BIGGEST NAME IN TELEVISION HISTORY as not even the BBC can beat ATV for legendary entertainment as id revive CROSSROADS in its original ATV form NOT ELDORADO as FREEMANTLE AUSTRALIA formerly GRUNDY plan to revive THE YOUNG DOCTORS thats a better idea or BROOKSIDE thats more like anything but ELDORADO its a joke and its not funny so let the terrible soap opera rest in peace.

    • Eltel says:

Dear oh dear, I should get my blood pressure tested if I were you if you get so mad over a half decent soap opera. You aren’t forced to watch these shows you know, so sit down, close your eyes and have a break, then learn to use the button marked ‘off’ on your TV.

By the way, I would take more notice of your rant if you could use upper case and punctuation properly, not to mention spelling – Tou’re no James Joyce

  4. Elaine says:

If they wanted another prime time soap they’d either network River City from Scotland or move Doctors into the evening.

I can’t see them bringing back a show that will be forever – wrongly like Crossroads – attacked for a few little issues that were sorted out.

    • Jane says:

Elaine, Im sure the ‘New Eldorado’ would be completely different and contempory to compete with the other raft of the soaps/mini series in the International TV market.

  5. Jamie says:

Great show, has just as much right to be on air as any current soap.

    Bring it Back please!

  6. Well it would be a nice alternative to the grotty and gloomy Eastenders.

  7. neil sutton says:

They could move a family over there from EastEnders to get an ‘instant’ audience.

  8. Look at the huge hit Benidorm has been…if the BBC can come up with a good script, actors who we are familiar with that CAN act they will have a winner on their hands! They should focus on the actual expats and gradually introduce foreign families into the script as the original Eldorado had too much going on too soon when it started.Personally I would love to see it back on our screens and as Neil says a good idea would be to have an instant family(East Enders) move there.

  9. Moonbeam says:

    Costa-del-Crossroads, why not. :P

  10. James says:

There were massive fires next to Eldorado HQ lastnight. Hope all is well there….

  11. Luskentyre says:

Can 94% of people be wrong? “Eldorado” was never the failure certain people make it out to have been. It was latterly getting viewing figures any show would die for these days. It was in the top 5 most watched programmes!

Groundbreaking, daring, fun, gorgeous – “Eldorado” was all of those things, and can be again.

  12. Paul says:

Eldorado was absolute rubbish but the new team managed to turn it around. Let’s face it – if ITV can put Emmerdale on, this has to be a viable concept!! It’s a shame – they should have given it another 12 months grace. I’m sure it could have succeeded. The problems are arguably attributed to the initial team compromising far too much in the way of quality by trying to rush the series to air. And I must say, that final episode where Marcus’ Renault Alpine suddenly turned into a dragged up old Triumph TR7 (with incredibly fake painted wood head/fog lights)… come on!!!

  13. Denny says:

Passions was superb, bring it back!
