Bethany Platt’s current storyline has been the cause of ‘heated disputes’.

Viewers have seen Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) ingratiate himself with 16-year-old impressionable Bethany (Lucy Fallon), inviting her to work in his beauty business. However, he has sinister intentions which will come more and more to light as the storyline progresses.

Coronation Street scriptwriter Jan McVerry addressed the story at a recent event and revealed that her colleagues have been divided over its dark nature, the Daily Star reports.

“I think it’s an important story to tell for young people, particularly those who may be lacking in self that many discussions have been had regarding its dark nature.-confidence.

“There are worries these unscrupulous bastards get in your lives and lure you away. It is a very dark subject.

“My own children are teenagers but others with very young children have asked ‘should we be going into this darker territory?’.

“We have had many discussions on how to tell the story.” – Jan McVerry

Jan McVerry has been writing for the street since the late 1990s following stints as a storyliner earlier in the decade. She was speaking at a panel in Salford on the future of Coronation Street when she made the above comments.
