As the 50th Anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality nears Channel 4 has announced a documentary which looks into the world of same-sex parenting.
“The notion of parenthood had changed so much in fifty years, and Burning Bright is very proud to… tell the story of what a family is in 2017.” – Seamus Murphy-Mitchell, Executive Producer at Burning Bright Productions
Homosexuality was partially decriminalised on July 27th 1967. Now Channel 4’s ‘All4’ on-demand service will bring to viewers an as yet untitled documentary as part of a season of programming to mark the historic moment in British history. The BBC have also announced a series of programmes under a Gay Britannia strand that will also note the landmark date of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales.
The All4 production, which aims to celebrate the progress made for the LGBT community over the past five decades, will be fronted by Hollyoaks actor Kieron Richardson. Kieron will explore parenting in the gay community and speak to those who have been part of the journey. The documentary follows Kieron as he meets parents and children, while he discovers more about the world of surrogacy and modern parenting, the challenges faced, and finding out how rewarding the experience can be.
The one-off half-hour factual programme will release exclusively on All 4, Channel 4’s on-demand channel. Casting and filming will soon be taking place with the documentary set to arrive on All 4 later in the summer. The programme is being produced by Burning Bright Productions.
“It’s an honour to be a part of this very exciting documentary, and also the significance of its place in marking the 50th anniversary of such a hugely important milestone in LGBTQIA history. As an expectant father myself I am fascinated to learn about other people’s experiences and also to hear their insight & perspectives on all the issues LGBTQIA parents face. As part of the Channel 4 family, I cannot wait to go on this journey with the dream team that is All 4 & Burning Bright.”
Richardson has played Ste Hay in the Channel 4 soap since 2006 and is currently expecting twins with his husband Carl.
