ATV Gallery: farewell TTTV City Road and Trinity Square

ATV Today bids farewell to two media landmarks in the North East; Tyne Tees Television on City Road and Trinity Square car park.

2010 was the year that the North East said goodbye to two iconic media landmarks; the ‘Trinity Square Car Park’ in Gateshead – made famous by the film Get Carter, but it also featured in many other northern-set series such as Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads – and the studios of Tyne Tees Television on City Road in Newcastle which produced over the years award winning dramas and documentaries, popular children’s programming, daytime game shows and of course the cult music series The Tube.

ATV News cameras have captured the final months of the landmarks…

Tyne Tees Television

Tyne Tees TV began broadcasting from the City Road studios in 1959. The complex was originally based in a converted warehouse, with later additions added to the site in the 1960s and 1980s. With the regional ITV network swallowed up and spat out by Granada and Carlton, City Road closed as studios for the final time in 2005. Tyne Tees, a proud North Eastern brand confined to local news only in recent years, with ‘new studios’ based in an industrial estate over the river Tyne in Gateshead.

Trinity Square aka The Get Carter Car Park

The Trinity Square complex was designed in 1962 by the Owen Luder Partnership when Brutalism was regarded as the cutting edge of architecture, never fully opened – the restaurant on the top floor aborted – it became most famous for its starring role in the movie Get Carter of 1970 starring Michael Caine. The lower floors of the car park housed a supermarket – Presto for many years – and an indoor market. Other stores within the complex included Boots, Littlewoods and Rumbelows.

As well as Get Carter its also made appearances in numerous television productions including Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? and Our Friends In The North.
