Critics often attack drama’s such as The Bill and Holby City for being populated by ex-soap stars so we’ve decided to put that to the test. Over the next few weeks we’ll being taking a look at the different casts of our continuing drama’s to see how many of them really are ex-soap stars.

Our third look probing into this subject is into the beeb’s ED based saga Casualty. The long running drama has, over the past ten years, been accused of relying on ex-soap stars to populate its emergency department with staff and accident victims. But as with The Bill and Holby City we shall take a look at the regular cast to see if this is a fair criticism.

  1. Georgia Taylor – plays Ruth Winters. Was Toyah Battersby in Coronation Street from 1997 to 2003.

  2. Tristan Gemmill – plays Adam Trueman. Previously had roles in The Bill and Family Affairs and London’s Burning.

  3. Charles Dale – plays Big Mac. Starred alongside Georgia Taylor in Coronation Street where he played Dennis. Also had regular roles in Steel River Blues and The Lakes.

  4. Gillian Kearney – plays Jessica Harrison. In the late 1980’s she appeared in Brookside as Debbie McGrath. Kearney also played the character in Debbie & Damon, a ‘soap bubble’ episode. Most recently she appeared in two seasons of Shameless.

  5. Paul Fox – plays Simon Tanner. Something of a veteran soap actor having regular roles in Emmerdale and Coronation Street and also The Royal.

  6. Sunetra Sarker – plays Zoe Hanna. Another actress with a few soap credits under her belt including Brookside and Emmerdale. The actress also had main roles in The Chase, No Angels, London Bridge and Playing the Field.

  7. James Redmond – plays Abs. Best known for his long stint in Hollyoaks as Finn. Also starred in the short-lived Sky One drama Mile High.

  8. Jane Hazlegrove – plays Dixie. In the mid 1980’s she appeared in Coronation Street as Sue Clayton. Other roles include several episodes of Heartbeat and Judge John Deed.

Casualty currently has a regular cast of twenty – though this is changing very shortly and certain actors listed will depart. However, at the time of writing the cast list is accurate and therefore it is from this that we work from.

Of the twenty regular cast members eight have previously appeared in regular roles in soaps or big drama shows. That’s less than half the cast and as with Holby City the show has a smaller regular cast than The Bill – which currently has thirty. But how does that compare with Waterloo Road? Find out in the next instalment of our feature.
