Emmerdale hit a six-year low on Friday evening as the ITV1 soap clashed with Euro 2012 coverage on BBC One.

The residents of the Yorkshire Dales just couldn’t compete against the England V Sweden match on Friday evening. The Euro 2012 game drew an average audience of 11 million viewers to BBC One with a peak of 16.3 million viewers – there was no way Emmerdale was going to come anywhere close. According to overnight figures Friday evening’s instalment, which delayed, dropped to 3.6 million viewers.

The soaps are the main victims of schedule shuffles as ITV and BBC One move programmes around to accommodate the football. For the duration of Euro 2012 each of the main three soaps, and regular dramas such as Holby City and Casualty, are affected somehow by the football which will inevitably have an impact on their ratings.
