EyeSpy: Remembering Andrew Gold

Andrew Gold, best known for ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’, the theme from hit US sitcom The Golden Girls, has died aged 59.

The singer and songwriter died from a heart attack, newspaper reports suggest. His first major hit was ‘Lonely Boy’, released in 1977, and was followed up with ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’ a year later. The latter became best remembered as the theme tune to The Golden Girls starring Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Betty White and Estelle Getty. The TV version, airing from 1985 to 1992 was sung by Cindy Fee. The follow up series, The Golden Palace, also used Gold’s song, however re-recorded.

Andrew himself however provided vocals for other television series, including Mad About You. Other music credits include being part of 80s group Wax, with hits ‘Bridge To Your Heart’ and ‘Right Between Your Eyes’.

Andrew Gold was born in Burbank, August 2, 1951. Died  June 3, 2011. An audio interview with Andrew can be heard on the Smooth Radio website here.
