Flooding in Tyne and Wear and County Durham

Homes have been evacuated and train services disrupted, as heavy downpours continue across parts of Tyne and wear and Durham.

About 70 areas in England and Wales are being warned to expect flooding, with northern England the worst affected.

Some areas could see 50mm  of rain – which is nearly a fortnight’s worth of rain  – by the day’s end, the Met Office said.

In Tyne and Wear, County Durham 200 homes were evacuated, while some parents have been asked to consider keeping children at home and moving expensive items upstairs.

Durham and Northumbria Police warned of dangerous driving conditions, describing many routes as “unpassable”.

Elsewhere, flooding has closed sections of major roads, including the A1 around Catterick in North Yorkshire. North Yorkshire Fire Service said it had dealt with about 100 calls, particularly from the Catterick, Richmond and Harrogate areas, and rescued six people from their cars overnight who were stranded  caught in the rain.

There is more rain due for today and the Met Office has put out several “Be Prepaired warnings” for certain areas

Train services between Newcastle and Edinburgh have restarted after being suspended, while various other rail services in northern England are affected, with East Coast advising passengers not to travel if at all possible.

The Tyne and Wear Metro  has statred ” – Trains are running to all destinations subject to delay. Please leave extra time for your journey. We’re sorry for any inconvenience.”
