James Allen joins BBC Radio 5 Live’s Formula 1 team

Former ITV F1’s lead commentator James Allen is returning to Formula 1 Commentary, with BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I’m delighted to announce that I am joining the BBC Radio 5 Live team as F1 correspondent and lead commentator this season.” He wrote earlier this evening on his website jamesallenonf1.com

Allen was with ITV’s F1 coverage between 1997-2008 as a Pitlane Reporter and then Commentator after Murray Walker’s Retirement in 2001. Allen as a Commentator was very divided with the viewing public. Positives been his enthuasiastic and knowledgeable, but was seen as shouty and had significant bias towards Lewis Hamilton.

BBC and SKY are sharing rights from 2012 on television. The BBC have seen many people leave to defect to Sky including Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz on TV. David Croft who commentated on Radio 5 Live has also left­ with Anthony Davidson and Natalie Pinkham.

Allen has never done radio commentary before and it is still unclear who will be along side him in co-commentary. It is also rumoured that former BBC F1 TV Commentator Jonathan Legard will be a stand in for Allen.
