Munich Air Disaster: I Was There

Munich Air Disaster: I Was There

The National Geographic Channel is to air a new documentary on the infamous Munich Air Disaster which virtually wiped out the then Manchester United football team.

The programme features an exclusive interview with Sandy Busby which has been especially recorded for the look back at the events of that fateful day over 50 years ago. Sandy is the son of former Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby who died in 1994 and who had taken Manchester United to great heights, they won the league in both 1956 and 1957, and were runners-up to Aston Villa in the 1957 FA Cup Final.

Sandy Busby opens up about the 1958 plane crash in Munich which robbed so many young Manchester United players of their lives making this one of the most shocking football tragedies in history.

Seven players and three club officials were among the 23 people who were killed at the scene; one died from his injuries two weeks later, while two other players were injured to such an extent that they never played football again. Busby suffered multiple injuries and twice received the Last Rites, but he recovered from his injuries and left hospital after nine weeks.

Also featuring in the programme is Harry Gregg, the goalkeeper for the world famous team known as the ‘Busby Babes’, and Vera Lukic, a Serbian woman whom he saved from the wreckage.

Revealing the long-term consequences of the tragedy, Gregg’s reflective excursion into the past forms a fitting tribute to his team mates who are, to this day, remembered as one of the greatest teams of all time.

Busby eventually rebuilt the United squad and guided them to a 3–1 victory over Leicester City in the 1963 FA Cup Final as well as becoming league champions in 1965 and again in 1967. In 1968 the team won the European Cup, and a year later Busby retired, however continued with the club for many years following in differing roles.

Munich Air Disaster: I Was There airs Monday, 29th August at 9pm on the National Geographic Channel.
