New Year Report: Zavvi, Ratings and Short Memories

Britannia High, flopped big timeThe New Year Report, a special edition of The Weekend Report, which reviews the bigger stories of the past few days in the run up to the start of a brand new year – 2009. In this issue we cover the closure of Woolies, a fantastic Christmas for the BBC and the prospect of ITV actually having a hit drama in 2009.

In just a few hours 2008 will be at an end and 2009 will be here but apparently we’ll have to wait an extra second for 2009 to arrive as a “leap second” is added onto clocks around the world tonight. While this all sounds rather Star Trek like apparently our clocks occasionally fall out of sync will “universal” time as the rate at which the Earth spins is slowing down and so, occasionally, “leap seconds” are added or subtracted to our clocks. So as well as 2008 having an extra day in February it’s also got a second added to it tonight.

Zavvi and Woolies:

Within a few days of the New Year Woolworths would have disappeared from the high-street, perhaps Woolworths: Everything Must Go!forever. By January 5th all the stores will have closed and as no buyer has yet come forward for the company it’s likely its’ the last we’ll ever see of Woolworths. So as the company is set to disappear it’s selling off everything in its stories and I mean everything. If you ever wanted a fridge to hold lots of chilled bottles of some shelves head down to Woolies, if your branch is still open, as they are flogging them right now.

Meanwhile Zavvi has also gone into administration in a move that shocked me. However, rather annoying is the fact I can’t now use my gift-card I got in there, from a friend for Christmas, as they aren’t accepting them. Instead I have to write off to the administrators to get the money for it instead. It’s rather unfair really not to be accepting gift cards as they’ve already had the money for it!

ITV Drama in 2009 – A Hit Please

itvIn the office we’ve been taking bets on whether or not ITV will actually have a hit drama in 2009. While Demons does look quite good, and actually has a good cast, it remains to be seen whether it will prove popular with viewers. While Moving Wallpaper and The Fixer will be back in 2009 they can hardly be described as hits for ITV as they lost half their viewers across their run. As pretty much everything ITV has launched this year, drama wise, as flopped bets in the office aren’t in ITV’s favour. What do you think? Could 2009 be the year for ITV drama?

Britannia High

Surprisingly ITV don’t have any plans to give its dire Sunday night flop, Britannia High, another Some of the cast from Britannia Highseason – we wonder why? Could it be the fact it was panned by critics? Could be it was savaged by Charlie Brooker on his BBC Four show? Could it be was beaten every single week by the Anitques Roadshow? Could it be because its ratings were crap? Or could it be that Britannia High was just rubbish? Whatever the reason ITV don’t seem keen on repeating their mistake of commissioning the dire flop. However, according to the Wikipedia page for the flop drama ITV are keen to hear from fans of the show on whether or not there should be a second season.

“There are currently no plans for a second series of Britannia High. ITV need to hear viewers responses to whether they want a series 2 and are therefore, urging people to email viewerservices@itv.com to let them know they want to see a second series of Britannia High.”

Then again Wikipedia was never known for its accuracy, was it? No doubt this is some desperate fan, the only fan, or a desperate cast member hopeful for a second season. Our advice – give up hope now.

BBC running late

Apparently on some forums posters were moaning about BBC One running late on Christmas Day, some even suggested it was a deliberate attempt at the BBC to dent ratings for ITV. I wonder who the BBC could possibly have got that idea from? Maybe ITV got a taste of their own medicine or maybe the BBC was just simply running slightly late. There doesn’t always have to be a sinister agenda behind these things, you know!

Xmas Day Ratings

Wallace and GromitAnd finally BBC One had a fantastic Christmas Day and Boxing Day ratings wise while ITV could barely compare. BBC One did well thanks to its excellent line up while all ITV offered was lame Emmerdale, tired old Coronation Street and its dancing rip-off, Dancing On Ice. Is it anyone wonder the BBC won with its offerings of Royle Family, Doctor Who, Wallace and Gromit and EastEnders?

That’s it for this issue but from everyone at ATV News Network we wish all our readers a very Happy New Year.
