EyeSpy: Remembering Chrissy Amphlett

EyeSpyChrissy Amphlett, best known as the lead singer of 1990s pop group The Divinyls, has died aged 53. Here we remember the Australian singer for her biggest hit.

The saucy single, I Touch Myself, became a UK top ten hit, reached number one in Australia and number four in the USA’s Top 100 in January 1991.

The singer and actress died in New York her husband and former co-band member announced today. She had been battling breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Divinyls drummer Charley Drayton said his wife had died surrounded by close friends and family after falling asleep.

“Chrissy’s light burns so very brightly,” Drayton said in a statement, adding, “Hers was a life of passion and creativity; she always lived it to the fullest. With her force of character and vocal strength she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women.”

The Divinyls were founded in Australia back in 1980 and through to 1996 recorded five studio albums, I Touch Myself however became their best known track. NBC notes that in March 2013 Amphlett was named as one of Australia’s top 10 singers of all time.
