The actress told E! that “If there ever was the right story, we would do it”.
Gellar made the comments during an interview to promote her new CBS comedy The Crazy Ones which co-stars Robin Williams.
However, she did have words of caution on the possibility of a Buffy movie noting “the thing with Buffy is that Buffy was a movie, and it ultimately didn’t work as a film….the story works better over time.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally started out as a 1992 (comedyish) movie starring Kristy Swanson as the Slayer. However, the film was not a box-office hit and Joss Whedon reworked the premise into a television series which launched in 1997 and was both a ratings & critical hit.
The possibility of another Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie has been raised several times. In 2009 it was revealed a remake was in the works without the involvement of Joss Whedon. However, the project has been stuck in development hell since then with several scripts being rejected.
Joss Whedon is currently busy working on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D so it seems unlikely he would have any time to pen a Buffy script. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role in The Crazy Ones is her first big television role since the demise of her CW drama series Ringer last year.
Meanwhile Gellar’s Buffy co-star Anthony Head is, according to British press, one of the contenders to replace Matt Smith in Doctor Who. An announcement on who will play the 12th incarnation of The Doctor is due to be made on Sunday evening.
