Remembering Mike Winters

Bernie and Mike Winters on Celebrity Squares, ATVMike Winters, best remembered for his long running television series with his younger brother Bernie, has died aged 82.

The pair, having been ‘discovered’ by singer and entertainer Tommy Steele, made their television break in 1957 on the BBC’s Six Five Special. They later switched to ITV where they fronted their own variety series  for ABC/Thames TV as well as making numerous appearances on shows such as Christmas Carnival, Saturday Variety (pictured right), Showtime, Celebrity Squares (pictured left) and The New Palladium Show.

Mike Winters, Saturday Variety, ATVIn 1978 the partnership ended when the brothers, following a row, spit up and refused to speak to each other. The pair did however reconcile before Bernie’s death aged 58 in 1991.

After the split Bernie took up with a new partner, a St Bernard dog, Schnorbitz making numerous appearances on chat shows, most notably a regular on Des O’Connor Tonight, while Mike moved to Miami where he became an author.

Three years ago he published his memoirs, The Sunny Side of Winters. At the same time he returned to the UK to live in Gloucestershire, where he died.
