Paul Ryder, who appeared as Butch Dingle in the long running soap under stage name Paul Loughran, has joined a primary school in East Lancashire.
The former actor joined ITV soap Emmerdale in 1994 and remained with the series until 2000 when Butch was killed-off. Ryder went on to appear in several other productions including a leading role in ITV drama Blue Murder.
However he says he has no plans to return to the profession as he takes on his new job as a teacher of Year 2 children at Cedars Primary School in Blackburn. The 43-year-old told the Lancashire Telegraph:
Teaching is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I have four children of my own and always enjoyed teaching them. There’s also a lot of teachers in my family so it just seemed like something that I was meant to do.
I did work placements at The Redeemer CE School in Blackburn and at Christ Church CE School in Colne, before starting at Cedars.
Paul took a teaching course at Edge Hill University, near Ormskirk, after deciding to turn his back on acting. He made his last television appearance in BBC One daytime soap Doctors in 2011.
I’ve no plans to do any TV acting at the moment — I just want to focus on learning how to become the best teacher I can be… Cedars is an absolutely fantastic school and I love this job so much.
The loveable rogue Butch Dingle died from his injuries following a crash between a haulage truck and a coach in the centre of the fictional Emmerdale village back in 2000. The departure won Best Exit at the British Soap Awards.
