Sue Nicholls is to look back at her time on the UK’s first daily American style daytime soap – Crossroads – on ITV next week.
In a new series of You Saw Them Here First, Sue looks back at her four years at the Birmingham based serial produced by ATV.
In the show that breaks into the archives to reveal the television debuts of some of Britain’s best-loved actors, presenters and pop stars, the 70-year-old comes face to face in the video vaults of ITV with her first television role. As waitress Marilyn Gates Sue first hit the screens in 1964 remaining with the series until 1968.
Storylines saw her involved with a series of men including an interracial storyline when she dated an Asian barman. She was also wooed by the local Vicar who she later married. Not before one of their dates saw her falling in the lake.
She also made the pop charts thanks to the soap which was set in the fictional village of Kings Oak and centred around the Crossroads Motel. A storyline saw waitress Marilyn become a nightclub singer, this resulted in a top twenty hit for Sue with the song from the series ‘Where Will You Be?‘ The track penned by Tony Hatch saw Sue become a media star at the time appearing on television shows to perform the hit.
In 1968 Sue decided to pursue her music career and departed Kings Oak after her wedding to vicar Peter Hope (Neville Hughes). Marilyn however went on for a further five years when Nadine Hanwell took over the role.
Other personalities in episode one of You Saw Them Here First include Nick Pickard of Hollyoaks’ fame confronted with his appearance as a lizard, Brian Blessed on Judi Dench spitting at him on Z Cars and Alison Steadman has the first lesbian kiss on TV way back in 1974.
Narrated by Robert Webb, You Saw Them Here First airs on Wednesday, March 12th at 8pm on ITV.
