Poll – Should Tuition Fees Rise: The Results

Poll – Should Tuition Fees Rise: The Results

Since last week we have been asking you to vote on the issue of whether or not University tuition fee should rise or not. Well voting has now closed and we can reveal the results.

Since last week we have been asking you to vote on the issue of whether or not University tuition fee should rise or not. It’s a issue that could very well divide the Liberal Democrat/Conservative coalition simply because in the past the Lib Dems have opposed the tuition fee. In fact in the past they have pledged to scrap it and at the last election many Lib Dems signed personal pledges – including party leader Nick Clegg – to vote against any planned rise in fees.

Now the government they are a part of wants to allow universities to charge students whatever they want to fill a gap in funding. The move could see fees triple with the cost per year for some students going up to as much as £12,000. Others fear that the ‘top end’ universities will effectively price poorer students out of the education system by charging huge amounts that only richer parents can afford.

Next month will see protests in London by students over the proposals but ahead of that we can reveal the results of our own poll on the issue. It probably won’t come as a surprise that the majority of our readers are opposed to any such rise. Nearly half, 49.8%, voted No to any such rise while 40.9% voted that the Liberal Democrats should honour their pledges and vote against rises. This means that 90.7% of our readers effectively voted against the rise – nearly all of those who voted.

Some readers did believe that fees should rise but crucially only for those who can afford it – the rich. Perhaps introducing means testing where households earning over a certain amount per year are charged higher fees while poorer students are charged less? It’s certainly a compromise that the Liberal Democrats should explore and 5.1% of our readers voted for that option. However, a few thought that fees should rise regardless of whether students can afford them or not and 3.7% voted that way while 0.5% of readers were unsure on the issue.

ATV Today would like to thank all those who took part in this week’s poll. A full new season of Weekly Polls will launch soon.
