Savannah Guthrie takes her seat on Today

Savannah Guthrie officially became the new co-anchor of NBC’s Today programme this morning.

Matt Lauer welcomed her to the anchor desk and repeated the tradition at the show of replaying the opening voiceover.

The former third hour presenter on Today was chosen to replace Ann Curry last month. Curry was controversially booted out of the programme after executives became unhappy over a decline in ratings.

“I’m so proud and honored to be in a place occupied by so many women that I admire. Ann, Meredith, and Katie, and Jane, Deborah, Barbara”. – Savannah speaking this morning.

Thousands of fans took to the internet to vent their anger at NBC’s decision.

For now NBC executives will have to closely monitor the situation and assess whether with the presence of Savannah Guthrie the show can whip off ABC’s challenge or whether in the not too distant future it will have to eat its hand off as many commentators have alluded to in order to save itself….

Such are the challenges of being a preferred media hero…
