Skin Colour Change for BBC Toy Character

BBC / Ragdoll productionsA doll based on one of the characters in the CBeebies children’s programme In The Night Garden is to be replaced after complaints the toy version of character Upsy Daisy was too light skinned.

Following a ‘handful’ of complaints the commercial arm of the BBCBBC Worldwide – has asked the manufacturer of the doll to create a new version with brown skin; which will be issued to stores by company Hasbro from Easter onwards.

The production company, Ragdoll, commented that none of the characters in the programme were intended to represent a specific race or culture.

“The characters are toys, not representations of people.” they told BBC News.

In the Night Garden launched on the BBC’s CBeebies channel in 2007 and has quickly become one of the most popular programmes on the station. The show is just one in a long line of hits for Teletubbies co-creators Anne Wood and Andy Davenport.

The doll which is currently on sale, with its lighter skin tone, will remain so until the stock runs out. BBC Worldwide have decided not to withdraw it as they state most purchasers were happy with the product.
