Public tastes were changing at a breakneck speed by the late 1960s and although traditional radio serials still had a loyal audience, housewives were increasingly turning to television to watch imported American daytime ‘soaps’ such as Peyton Place, General Hospital and Days of our Lives.

You may recall that last year I reported that Nigel Giles was running a Pozible fundraising campaign to get his book about the legendary Australian ‘soap opera’ Number 96 into print.
Number 96 is quite possibly the world’s most infamous soap opera; it broke new ground by tackling taboo subjects head on but balanced this with some wonderful comic moments. When the programme launched in 1972 the media dubbed it the night that Australian television lost its virginity.
The National Film & Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) have issued a stark warning that the nations rich audio visual collection is at risk of extinction unless urgent action is taken immediately.
