The CW: Renewed and Cancelled

The CW: Renewed and Cancelled

We round up the cancellation and renewal orders for The CW’s range of programmes for the next season with Smallville, Supernatural and Gossip Girl all returning while the revival of Melrose Place won’t go beyond a first season.

Renewed: The CW announced earlier this year most of its renewals with only a few left of the list which raised some eye brows. Gossip Girl has been given a fourth season despite a lukewarm reception to its third series – which concludes shortly. What do we know about the fourth season? Well some of it will be set and filmed in Paris and these scenes will feature Serena [Blake Lively] and Blair [Leighton Meester] while Jenny [Taylor Momsen] will be absent for an unspecified number of episodes. The broadcaster’s revival of 90’s drama Beverly Hills 90210 will also be back – this time for a third season.

Smallville and Supernatural will also be back despite speculation that both would end with their current seasons. Ratings however, have proved that both shows still enjoy strong popularity and so they’ve been given new season orders. Also back will be break out hit The Vampire Diaries and America’s Next Top Model. Late pick ups by The CW include the renewal of One Tree Hill for an 8th season and Life Unexpected for a second. It was widely reported that the broadcaster would only be able to pick up one of the dramas but in the end it opted to renew both. It also picked up pilots Hellcats and remake Nikita.

Cancelled: It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Melrose Place won’t be back for a second season. Despite certain cast members stating they were hopeful over the dramas chances in the end the ratings were never good enough to justify a second season. The revival, unlike 90210, just didn’t find a sound enough fan base and rumours of its death have been circulating for a long time it’s just now its official.
