Editor Reports: Mad Men

ATV Today’s editor Doug Lambert suggests a televisual highlight for your viewing pleasure as the critically acclaimed and superb drama Mad Men returns for a fourth series on BBC Four tonight.

The critically acclaimed and superb drama Mad Men returns for a fourth series on BBC Four tonight. The BBC originally planned to show the fourth season of Mad Men next year – several months after its broadcast in America – but decided to bring it forward so we are only a few months behind our American cousins. The superb drama is set in an advertising agency in 1960s New York and the attention to detail is second to none.

For those of you who haven’t seen Mad Men before and balk at the idea of another 1960s drama this is no Heartbeat! This is a well crafted piece of art with script, direction, camera, acting and costume all coming together to form a masterpiece of television. The drama by the characters is wonderfully played as the changing social attitudes of the 1960s are mixed in with storylines about advertising and the big events of the 1960s play in the background – the Cuban Missile crisis and the assassination of John F. Kennedy have all been featured so far.

The fourth series of Mad Men is set in 1964 and is a slight reboot of the series – though it didn’t really need one – with a slight change in the set up. A new advertising agency has been set up by some of the characters but despite their success at Stirling Cooper, the ad-execs are finding it hard to find clients for their new business. Don and Betty are now divorced with Betty having re-married and Don..well Don’s hasn’t been so lucky with love.

Mad Men: Public Relations on BBC Four/BBC HD Channel at 10pm. The BBC HD Channel is available on Sky 145, Virgin Media 108, Freesat 108 and Freeview 50
