Julie Plec, producer of The Vampire Diaries, has revealed that a main character was nearly killed off at the end of season three.

In an interview with TV Line the producer revealed the original plans the end of the third season featured original vampire Klaus (Joseph Morgan) being killed off. However, the producer decided to change her mind and the character was spared with Klaus’ spirit being transferred into the body of Tyler (Michael Trevino) by Bonnie (Kat Graham) before it was staked by Alaric (Matt Davis).

” I will tell you this — and I haven’t said this before: Our intention was to kill Klaus at the end of Season 3. We created the character last year… and our intention was, that after a long, arduous year of trying to vanquish and defeat the villain, our heroes would prevail and he would be no more. But when you havewho are that good, making such a distinct mark in the roles that they are playing, you have to let your storytelling evolve and wrap around that a little bit. We collectively decided around the middle of Season 3 that we weren’t done with Klaus — or Joseph.” -Julie Plec on TV Line

The character of Klaus was introduced during the latter half of season two originally when he occupied the body of Alaric – though after a little while the original vampire himself arrived in Mystic Falls. Klaus’ brother Elijah (Daniel Gillies) had already been introduced to The Vampire Diaries and since fellow original vampires such as Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic). In the interview with TV Line Plec revealed they were ‘not done’ with the original family.

Do you think Klaus should have been killed off in the season three finale or did Julie Plec make the right decision in keeping the troublesome hybrid?
