Was the BBC’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games up to scratch?

BBC Sport, BBC PicturesAs the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi come to an end, the question has to be asked, did the BBC give the games the best coverage possible?

Despite negative press and problems behind the scenes, after a few slow days the games really started to pick up interest. Did Fans from Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland feel the buzz from Delhi at home?

The BBC only bought the rights to the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, and sports fans on forums have been divided if this caused their coverage to be ‘low key’.  The BBC’s main presenters included Sue Barker, Jake Humphrey, Clare Balding and John Inverdale, all presented from London in the generic sports studio (commonly used for Match of the Day).

Some fans thought it was a poor move, others thought it was a good cost save. However it become apparent that the BBC where commentating from events from television monitors in London too.

ATV Today contacted BBC Sport, and they confirmed that commentary for the Rugby 7’s, Boxing and Badminton was done from booths in London. However their commentary for the Athletics, Swimming, Diving and Cycling was done on-site in Delhi. The remainder of the events used the host broadcaster’s commentary, of which, many forum posters thought they weren’t in Delhi.

BBC Sport, BBC PicturesBBC Sport also told ATV Today that they had 153 staff out in Delhi, for TV and Radio, that is 99 less staff than in Melbourne in 2006. Positively the BBC have provided an extra 500 hours worth of TV coverage, using their interactive facility to the maximum. Overall it can be argued with more BBC personnel at home for these games, the BBC have produced a decent service, with more live hours of coverage. However quality over quantity may be argued…

The Commonwealth Games ends today, with the baton being handed over to Glasgow for 2014.
