Emmerdale star Zoe Henry has spoken about tonight’s emotional episode of the soap.
The episode from 7pm on ITV saw the denouement of Pierce’s (Jonathan Wrather) rape trial, with the control freak found guilty of committing the act against Rhona (Henry) on their wedding day and sent down for five years.
Explaining Rhona’s reaction to the verdict Henry noted:
“I’d love to say [Rhona’s] elated [at the verdict], but she’s too numb to even feel that. She sort of tears out of the court and finds herself outside gasping for breath, not quite believing what she’s heard.
“It’s not the reaction you’d imagine she would have, what comes is tears and overwhelming sadness because at the end of the day she did love Pierce and she’s now left in a situation where she’s not the woman she was and is married to a man who abused her. It’s quite moving how she reacts.
“She fears the worst, so it’s a shock when the verdict happens – a real shock and a very emotional one.” – Zoe Henry
Discussing the possibility of her character getting back together with Paddy (Dominic Brunt) whom she divorced following his affair with Pierce’s wife Tess, Henry revealed:
“I love working with Dominic, but I think it would be unrealistic for our writers to rush that because this is a very delicate situation. And for Rhona to trust anybody again… Paddy did betray her. She kind of roars at Paddy at some point and blames him, which is unfair, but of course if he hadn’t had the affair with Tess, she never would have married Pierce.
“She will move on and I’m sure she will find love again. I’d love to say it will be with paddy but I don’t know. It will be quite a way down the line.” – Zoe Henry
Finally, the actress effused over her friendship with co-star Jonathan Wrather, who played Pierce, and said Rhona being able to forgive Pierce one day would be cathartic for her.
“I’m gutted. You do become close, and Johnny lives the other side of the Pennines, so when he’s got heavy weeks he stays here with me and Jeff [Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle]. I’m devastated to be saying goodbye to a colleague, but I know I’ve made a new friend. I was on the phone to him just before because we’re having a leaving do for him this morning.
“I don’t think she’ll ever get over what he did to her, but if she could forgive him she might find peace, I suppose. I don’t know how I would feel but Rhona’s a bigger person than I am in a lot of ways.” – Zoe Henry
