London Live has announced its official media partnership with Amy’s Yard – the transformative Amy Winehouse Foundation programme that uses music to support the personal and professional development of aspiring young artists.
Amy’s Yard – The Amy Winehouse Foundation
“When we saw the transformative nature of what’s achieved with the young people on the Amy’s Yard programme, we felt showcasing the work they do would be the perfect opportunity for us to take our existing relationship with the Amy Winehouse Foundation to a new level. They’ve given us unprecedented access for this documentary and we hope to add to this initial piece as the partnership moves forward” – Lorna Cole, London Live’s Content and Partnerships Manager
To launch this partnership, London Live has commissioned a behind the scenes documentary about the Amy’s Yard programme that will broadcast exclusively on the channel on what would have been Amy’s 34th birthday tonight (14th September at 9pm). The broadcast also marks the 6th anniversary of the creation of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
The documentary, Amy Winehouse Foundation: Amy’s Yard, features interviews with Amy’s parents Mitch and Janis who discuss the transformational effects the programme has had on participants’ lives, as well as interviews with the most recent Alumni of the programme who have spent 12 weeks working from the North London studio Amy recorded in, with a professional producer to create an original track.
A recent Amy’s Yard graduate Akeem, 20, features in the documentary. He said: “My experience with Amy’s Yard has been an amazing journey that I will never forget. Being able to step into the world of people’s roles in the industry and getting their perspective on things was very beneficial”. He added, “Also being able to collaborate with amazing artists and to make my song at Amy’s studio were unforgettable moments that I will cherish for the rest of my life“.
The artists also attended a series of Master Classes delivered by current industry professionals from companies including Island Records, Amy’s record label. As part of the partnership London Live will be offering media training Master Classes for future students of the programme and giving Alumni the opportunity to perform on the news in the London Live studios.
Prior to the documentary airing the channel will also be celebrating the music and life of Amy Winehouse with Amy Winehouse, A Final Goodbye. The special is an intimate look into the life & times of Amy from her rise to pop super stardom through to the inner demons that inspired her work & eventually caused her untimely death. This programme airs from 7.30pm
“Since the early days of Amy’s Yard, London Live have been regular supporters of the project, so it seemed only natural to take our work together to the next step and make our partnership official. It has been an absolute pleasure working with the team at London Live to make the documentary, and we very much look forward to developing our relationship further and getting them even more involved in our work supporting talented young people” – Rowan Carnihan, Amy’s Yard’s Programme & Events Director
Amy died aged 27 in 2011 from alcohol poisoning. The talented-but-troubled jazz singer is fondly remembered for hits including Rehab, Back to Black and Valerie. Released in 2006, Amy’s Back to Black album won her five Grammy awards. Although noted for her musical success the beehive-haired performer often hit the headlines for less positive reasons including substance abuse, relationship issues and on one occasion lashing out a gig-goer.
Amy Winehouse, A Final Goodbye, 7.30pm and the UK premiere of Amy Winehouse’s Legacy: Amy’s Yard is on tonight at 9pm, exclusively on London Live. Freeview 8, YouView 8, Sky 117 and Virgin 159
