ITV sitcom Benidorm won’t be returning for an eleventh series its creator has confirmed.
First aired in 2007, the comedy follows a group of larger-than-life holidaymakers staying at the Solana Hotel.
The show’s cancellation was rumoured, not for the first time, back in April when its creator Derren Litten tweeted “Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm!” ahead of the series ten finale. Litten later played down the tweet with ITV also commenting that no decision had been made as to the show’s future.
However, in a new tweet posted earlier today (6 July), the writer confirmed the sitcom’s television conclusion, noting that it will live on in the form of a stage production.
“Yes folks it’s true, after months of speculation, I can finally confirm Benidorm series 10 was the LAST EVER TV SERIES of @BenidormTVshow – but the story continues in the form of http://www.benidormonstage.com – Come see us on tour and see what happens next!,” Litten wrote on Twitter.
Benidorm – Live is touring the UK after opening in Newcastle this September.
The series saw many well-known faces as regulars – and guest stars – over its decade on air with regular cast including Tim Healy, Sherrie Hewson, John Challis and Johnny Vegas. Others signed up to appear in the show have included EastEnders’ Shane Richie, Joan Collins of Dynasty fame, Stars in their Eyes host Matthew Kelly, comedians Hale and Pace and Are You Being Served? actress Wendy Richard.
The long running storylines also saw the likes of singer Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet fame feature as well as singer and Blind Date host Cilla Black.
Benidorm is ITV’s most successful holiday sitcom running for 74 episodes. Their previous attempt at sunshine-based laughs in Duty Free, ran for 22 episodes, over three series, in the mid-1980s. The success of Litten’s show was celebrated in February when the network aired a tribute documentary marking the 10th anniversary of the comedy.
