Judy Finnigan blasts vicious social media and tabloids

The former This Morning host has spoken about vicious online comments that turn women off working on TV.

Richard and Judy hosted ITV’s This Morning from its launch in 1988 until 2001.

Judy Finnigan has blasted the tabloid press and social media for vicious comments that make especially female presenters want to work less in the industry. Speaking to ITV regional news show Granada Reports she told reporter and presenter Lucy Meacock that she’s glad she’s turned her back on presenting. She suffered online abuse after making comments in 2014 on Loose Women about Ched Evans and his alleged actions against a woman.

“I’ve not been on telly for ages and I don’t want to do any more, it’s fine, I’m having a lovely time, but they still bloody follow me around, the paparazzi.” – Judy Finnigan

Finnigan began her broadcasting career at Anglia Television in the East, before switching to Granada Television, based in Manchester, which broadcasts to the North West. It’s while hosting Granada Reports, the evening news show, that she met second husband Richard Madeley. The couple married in the mid-80s before finding national fame as the original, and to many best, hosts of daytime magazine series This Morning. But fame hasn’t been something Judy has enjoyed.

Richard and Judy, far right, join the current This Morning hosts for an anniversary celebration.

“I do know quite a lot of women in television now who are finding it very hard to agree to appear on things because they get such vicious comments on social media and I think it is much worse for women.” – Judy Finnigan

She went on to note she has developed ‘an allergy’ to presenting on TV, adding ‘part of that is being fed up of being trailed after by paparazzi and people like that.’

“…you get to the point where you just think ‘I don’t want anything to do with it any more.” – Judy Finnigan

After departing ITV screens in 2001 Richard and Judy headed to Channel 4, and later UKTV, where they hosted a self-titled chat show. Both have also worked independently, during and after This Morning, with Judy becoming for a time one of the regulars on ITV’s topical series Loose Women and Richard a stand-in host on Good Morning Britain. In the 90s Richard hosted game show Runway, while Judy presented consumer series We Can Work It Out. The couple recently appeared back on ITV together to celebrate the 30th anniversary of This Morning.

The Granada Reports interview forms part of Lucy Meacock’s 30th anniversary of presenting the ITV Granada news show.

Judy for a time was one of ITV’s Loose Women.
