ITV opens the Weatherfield Wedding Album

Telly Today, highlights for Monday 13th July see us look back on some of Corrie’s most memorable big days and its a classic wedding in River City.

Coronation Street: Weddings

Jason Manford continues his look back through the Granada Television vaults at 60 years of Coronation Street with this second episode of the eight part series looking at Weatherfield Weddings. With each edition carefully curated from the archives the show is sure to bring alive classic moments and memories via specially selected highlights.

There have been 130 weddings over the decades and viewers will get to see some of the most dramatic, shocking and heart-warming. Of course we’ll see those who have been married several times – such as Steve McDonald and Gail Potter – as well as surprising unions like Alec Gilroy and Bet Lynch.

Reminisce with big rating big days such as Ken Barlow and Deirdre Langton’s wedding that almost took the limelight away from Prince Charles and Diana Spencer’s real-life grand affair and those ceremonies that went wayward.

Classic River City

In a change to the advertised episode – you can see that next week – BBC Scotland pay tribute to the recently deceased actor Johnny Beattie who died on the 9th July aged 93.

In what the Beeb describe as a ‘beautiful, much-loved episode from the 2012 archives’ River City Rewind sees Malcolm (Beattie) and Liz say ‘I do!’, becoming Mr and Mrs Hamilton on the banks of Loch Lomond – the home of STV’s Take The High Road serial that doubled as Glendarroch.

The location a nod to Eileen McCallum’s long television past, she appeared in ‘High Road‘ from it’s start in 1980 until its demise in 2003’ as shopkeeper Isabel and joined River City as Liz in 2005 remaining until 2018. Funny man and actor Johnny Beattie joined River City at its launch in 2002 as Malcolm and stayed with the series until 2015 when ill-heath saw him step out of the spotlight. His previous work included comedy specials on both the Beeb and STV as well as featuring in an episode of gritty crime drama Taggart in 1990 alongside Mark McManus.

In the storyline it’s the day of Malcolm and Liz’s loch-side wedding, but with emotions running high and Malcolm’s illness causing confusion, a happily-ever-after isn’t guaranteed.

After discovering Malcolm has handed over power of attorney to Liz, Eileen fears her father isn’t thinking straight. Despite all Eileen’s best efforts to delay the day, Malcolm is determined to marry Liz – but the tension between Eileen and Liz threatens to dampen the wedding.

This episode first aired on the 24th March 2012.
