Jason Byrne is to lead the cast of a new sitcom for BBC One.

Father Figure tells the story of Tom (Byrne) a married father with two sons who tries to be the best dad he can, but things don’t always work out for him due to bad luck and the influence of his extended family.

The series will be produced by Julia McKenzie and the executive producer is Stephen McCrum for the BBC. Byrne’s previous acting work includes roles in 2011 film Killing Bono and Father Ted.

BBC One have also announced the commission of three new dramas alongside Father Figure, including a Cold War spy thriller from Being Human creator Toby Whithouse.

“With the line-up of comic talent appearing on and writing for the channel in 2013, this will be a big year for Comedy on BBC One.” – Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One
