Described as one of the “pioneer sporting commentators” of television broadcasting in Australia, Tony Charlton has died aged 83.
Beginning his long career in television back in the 1950s he was part of the team which covered the Melbourne Olympic Games of 1956 for GTV9. The coverage was the first major Television event in Australia.
Charlton was bestowed the Order of Australia medal in 1990 and became a member of the Order of Australia nine years ago. The broadcaster died after a battle with bowel cancer.
