Sam Smith is named the winner of BBC Sound of 2014.
Touted as one to watch for 2014, Sam Smith has already hit the big time as vocalist on Naughty Boy’s single La La La which reached number one in May last year. The decision to give Smith the accolade of Sound of 2014 was made by 170 ‘tastemakers’ made up of DJs, critics and bloggers in the music world.
On being recognised by the industry, Sam Smith said: “I’m completely speechless. The shortlist is full of so many talented artists and it’s a huge compliment to be recognised by the industry and the BBC in this way. I’m completely overwhelmed!”
The list was started in 2003 and has been proved right in correctly predicting the next big music act. Last year the BBC Sound of 2013 named HAIM, who went on to have a number one debut album, Days Are Gone, in October 2013.
The top five acts named by BBC Sound of 2014 were:
1. Sam Smith
2. Ella Eyre
5. George Ezra
