This June, BBC One will broadcast a long weekend of live events to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s official 90th birthday, while ITV News Royal Editor, Tim Ewart, is releasing a book celebrating the nine decades of Queen Elizabeth II.
The weekend of birthday celebrations for the landmark anniversary begins on Friday the 10th of June with a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, and the traditional display of pageantry of the Queen’s Birthday Parade, the Trooping the Colour, will be held on Saturday June 11th, the actual birthday date, on Horse Guards Parade, culminating with the Royal Family making their annual appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
BBC One will also broadcast a special celebration on The Mall in St James’s Park taking place on Sunday 12 June to close the weekend of birthday celebrations. The iconic stretch will be transformed for its largest ever street party with 10,000 people gathered to celebrate The Queen’s patronage of over 600 charities and organisations on the occasion of her 90th birthday for The Patron’s Lunch.
The one-off spectacle will be a classic British ‘street party’ where guests will enjoy a hamper-style lunch at tables positioned along the full length of The Mall, with entertainment and Union flags aplenty. The Queen will be joined by other members of the Royal Family to celebrate the occasion. The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry are Joint Presidents of The Patron’s Lunch.
“We are thrilled to be broadcasting three days of events in June to mark Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday. It promises to be a fantastic weekend, climaxing with a huge street party in the Mall on the Sunday. It is a very significant birthday for the Queen and BBC One will be right at the heart of the celebrations.” – Phil Dolling, Head of Events Production
ITV News Royal Editor, Tim Ewart, has penned Queen Elizabeth II: A Celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday. The book captures the life and reign of the United Kingdom’s beloved and longest-serving monarch. Opening with a special message by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, the well illustrated book brings many aspects of her personal story and achievements to life, and includes specially reproduced documents such as The draft of the speech that Princess Elizabeth (as she then was) broadcast to the children of the Commonwealth in 1939 and The design for the Queen’s wedding dress by Sir Norman Hartnell.
Using memorable photographs and fascinating documents, this revealing book looks at how the Queen’s reign has seen some of the most unforgettable events in the history of the 20th and 21st centuries. The publication acts, Ewart hopes, as a record of decades of royal history – from royal tours to state visits, and from day-to-day engagements to notable family events and grand occasions, such as Trooping the Colour. Queen Elizabeth II: A Celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday recognises the dedication of a woman who has devoted her whole life to the service of her country.
The book is released next month in hardback, RRP£14.99, ISBN: 9780233004815.
