EyeSpy: Darling Buds Of May

With the news the real-life location of ITV drama The Darling Buds Of May is to be sold, we take a look back to the series that made a household name of Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Buss Farm near Ashford in Kent became the exterior for the farmhouse in the Yorkshire Television produced drama based on the novels by H E Bates.

The show, set in the 1950s and revolved around the Larkin family, launched in 1990 and ran until 1993, although not all the stories written were transferred to television, which is a regret of Pam Ferris who played Ma Larkin. She told The Alan Titchmarsh Show, “I wish we could get back together and finish off the series, before we all get too old!”

Other cast included Hollywood darling Catherine Zeta-Jones as daughter Mariette and popular actor David Jason as head of the household, Pop.

While the internal sets were based in Leeds the unique grand exterior of Grade II listed Buss Farm and its extensive grounds formed the backdrop for the outdoor scenes. The house and land, which has been in the hands of its current owners for over two generations, is now on sale for £1.35m. The complex comprises of, as well as the grand house, a Tudor barn and 20 acres of land.

It may just be a “perfick” price, as Pop Larkin would say, for a wealthy fan of the show. The series, which continues to be repeated on ITV3, still has a loyal following who make pilgrimages to the site near Pluckley.

Owner Roger Holmes has decided to sell the property due to financial reasons. Yesterday it was announced Sir David Jason is to release his autobiography.
