A former Deal or No Deal contestant has been imprisoned, after blowing the prize money he won on the show despite being bankrupt and having existing debts of £61,438.
Andy Barker scooped £35,000 on the Channel 4 Noel Edmonds presented game show, but spent the lot in just three months on expensive treats including holidays and jewellery.
He was caught out after one of his creditors saw his appearance on the show and contacted insolvency authorities.
As the 43-year old plasterer had been declared bankrupt in 2011, he had a duty to declare the prize money and use it to pay off some of his debt.
Warwick Crown Court imposed a 13-week prison sentence.
According to The Sun, Barker’s barrister Tim Pole told the court: “What should have been a joyful moment has become a nightmare.”
“Mr Barker thought he could get away with taking the money he had won and not informing the Official Receiver who could have used it to pay the creditors in his bankruptcy.
“This sentence should serve as a reminder that the rules of bankruptcy are there for a reason and must be followed.” – Glenn Wicks, Department of Business Innovation and Skills’ deputy chief investigations officer
Deal or No Deal airs weekdays on Channel 4.
