EastEnders star Laila Morse has been declared bankrupt.
The actress – real name Maureen Bass – is known to millions for her role as tough-talking wheeler dealer Mo Harris in the BBC One soap. Morse has played the role since September 2000.
However, following eleven years as a regular in Albert Square, bosses decided to make Mo a guest character last year – a move that has attracted criticism from some fans.
The 68-year-old filed a petition earlier this month after a bankruptcy order was issued on August 9 – with a legal notice appearing in The London Gazette last week.
She had previously discussed her financial strain in her autobiography Just A Mo which came out earlier this year.
Morse also opened up about her son Gerry’s addiction to heroin in the book, noting:
“When he got on to heroin he turned to crime to feed his habit, but I visited him in prison. And when he was out I’d drive him to his dealers and give him money for his next fix because I couldn’t see him in agony.”
Morse was given her first acting break in the gritty film Nil By Mouth which was written and directed by her brother Hollywood star Gary Oldman.
