Ellie Goulding, Jessie J and James Blunt have been confirmed for Top Of The Pops Christmas special.
“Rather like Christmas dinner, falling asleep in front of the telly and celebrating with family, hosting Top Of The Pops is fast becoming a yearly tradition for me and one I look forward to every year. With a great line up of acts this year’s shows promise to be as epic as ever.” – TOTPs Presenter Reggie Yates
Top Of The Pops will air at 2.00pm on Christmas Day with performances from some of the biggest acts this year including Ellie Goulding, James Blunt, Rizzle Kicks and One Republic. There will also be a special performance from Boyzone who are marking 20 years together.
Hosts Reggie Yates and Fearne Cotton will reveal who has got the all important Christmas number one for 2013. The pair will be back a week later for a New Year’s Eve special at 5.30pm. The special will look back at the year in music and feature the final number one of the year.
The show disappeared from screens in 2006 after a decline in ratings and a flop revamp saw it lean away from its traditional top forty countdown format. The series began in 1964 with many popular hosts over the years including Noel Edmonds and Tony Blackburn (pictured on a 1970s festive special below).
At its peak the weekly Top of the Pops, airing on Thursdays at 7pm, became a must-see for millions of pop-lovers as their favourite artists performed live in the studio – or mimed live to the track live – which was all part of the fun. In the 1970s its dance troupe Pans People were almost as famous as the show itself.
“It was a dream come true when we first performed on Top Of The Pops. The show has a special place in our hearts so to get the chance to perform on Top Of The Pops Christmas as we celebrate BZ20 makes it all the more special for Boyzone.” – Boyzone statement
Top Of The Pops Christmas Special airs at 2.00pm on Christmas Day with Top Of The Pops New Year airing at 5.30pm on New Year’s Eve.
