EastEnders cast and crew have filmed a last minute scene referencing the recent death of Nelson Mandela.
The former South African president passed away on Thursday (5 December) at the age of 95.
The scene will air during tonight’s episode and features Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) and Denise Fox (Diane Parish) reflecting on the day Mandela was released from prison after 27 years.
“EastEnders always aims to reflect big news stories and events that strike a chord with our audience.
“Nelson Mandela had such a huge effect on so many people’s lives that we felt it was important to reflect the impact his death has had.” – EastEnders Spokesperson
This isn’t the first time a news story has been referenced by EastEnders shortly after the event, with the birth of Prince George and Andy Murray’s victory at Wimbledon being the most recent examples.
Last summer during Britain’s glorious Olympics campaign a scene between Jean Slater, Tyler Moon and Ray Dixon saw them discussing how brilliant Team GB are and how proud they feel to be living in London.
The soap also referenced the death of pop icon Michael Jackson in a scene airing shortly afterwards in 2009.
