X Factor scored its lowest rated final in years as 9.7 million tuned in to see Sam Bailey crowned 2013 champion.
This series may have had the return of Sharon Osbourne and celebrated its tenth birthday, but the show failed to ignite the nation for the final between Nicholas McDonald and Sam Bailey.
An average of 9.7 million tuned into ITV from 7.30pm for the two hour grand-final which featured performances from One Direction and Elton John.
It is the lowest rated final since 2005, the year that Louis Walsh last won as a judge with Shayne Ward. Last night’s show did have a five minute peak of 11.9 million viewers.
The X Factor has suffered this series at decline ratings as it faced a resurgent Strictly Come Dancing which has been averaging over 10 million viewers. The BBC One dancing competition will see its first ever all female final next weekend after Patrick Robinson exited the show on Sunday. The semi-final was watched by 9.6 million viewers.
Sophie Ellis Bextor, Abbey Clancy, Susanna Reid and Natalie Gumede will do battle in the Strictly Come Dancing final next weekend on BBC One.
