BBC Radio disc jockey Gemma Cairney will move to the early weekday breakfast show slot in March.
Cairney, who currently presents the weekend breakfast show, will swap places with Dev who has hosted in his current position for four years. The early breakfast show at 4.30am is often seen as a training ground for Radio 1 DJ’s before moving onto bigger daytime shows.
Chris Moyles and Scott Mills both presented the early daytime slot.
“I am ultimately utterly in love with radio and I had to say yes to doing five shows a week on Radio 1. I take on this new role with an array of studio-worthy pyjamas and pride in the responsibility of becoming a supportive friend of the nation’s early morning risers. Bring it on.” – Gemma Cairney
A rising star of BBC Radio, Cairney has hosted show on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and BBC Three. This month she presents a special documentary celebrating African music on BBC 6 Music.
Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper said: “Chris Moyles and Scott Mills both did early breakfast on Radio 1, using it to showcase their creativity. Now it’s Gemma’s turn.”
Gemma will begin presenting in her new slot on Monday 31st March, with Dev beginning his first weekend breakfast on Saturday 29th March.
