‘Alex Against The Rock’ will see the presenter tackle a 1,200ft climb – which is higher than the Shard – over a three day period. The BBC note that Alex has put in three solid months of gruelling training with an expert team to help her conquer the colossal rock face.
Not only will it be an exhausting ordeal during the day, when she will burn up to 700 calories per hour, but at night time too when she will have to sleep on the vertical rock in a suspended tent.
As the rock becomes Alex’s home for three days, she’ll have to forgo washing and after just a few hours on the rock, is likely to suffer sore muscles, achy feet and cuts and bruises to her hands – not to mention tiredness from sleeping in a suspended bed!
Alex is taking on the challenge to raise money for people living incredibly tough lives in the UK and around the world, including families affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
I’ve been fortunate enough over the years to visit various Sport Relief projects and have seen, first-hand, the difference the money makes. Despite having no climbing experience (except the odd tree!) I felt compelled to say yes to this challenge.
To be honest it’s daunting and the intense training has been incredibly tough. I can’t quite get my head round hauling my body weight up one of North America’s tallest vertical rock faces!
I’ll also have to try and master suspended sleeping and the delicate issue of ‘toilet etiquette’ but the thought of helping those in need will get me though and I am relying on the public’s support to make all the difference. – Alex Jones
