Unreported World is to look into what its like to live in Jamaica as gay.
While Britain celebrated its first same-sex weddings earlier this year, in Jamaica the gay community continue to live underground, in fear of their lives if caught by authorities. Male gay sex is punishable by 10 years’ hard labour. The majority of Jamaica think that homosexuality is immoral.
Presenter Ade Adepitan investigates what its like to be gay in Jamaica. The eye-opening documentary meets one group of gay and transgender people who are living in a gully, which is designed to carry rubbish and floodwater from the city.
Ade meets 21-year-old Krissy who was born male but believes her true gender is female. She says she didn’t feel safe expressing this at home – and so she’s lived on the streets on and off since she was 12. Apart from her sister, she hasn’t seen most of her family for years.
Unreported World: Jamaica’s Underground Gays airs Friday 23rd May at 7.30pm on Channel 4.
